Public transport ticket prices are going UP

UPDATE: The Transport Minister says the decision to dramatically increase public transport fares was one of the most difficult of his political career.

Fares are set to increase an average of 8.6% on New Year's Day, generating an extra $30 million in revenue.

Minister Terry Mulder says it wasn't an easy decision.

Mr Mulder says the money will go back into the network for track upgrades and infrastructure replacement.

EARLIER: The Public Transport Users Association says fares on Melbourne's trains trams and buses will become the dearest in the country in the New Year.

The Ballieu Government is will increase ticket prices by an an average 8.6 per cent on New Year's Day.

Daniel Bowen of the Public Transport Users Association says Government needs to say where the extra revenue will go.

The price rises for trams, trains and buses will see commuters purchasing a daily all-zone fare pay an extra 90 cents which could amount to an extra $200 each year.

Commuters at Southern Cross Station this morning are angry they'll be slugged more to travel.

  • How else will they pay for Myki? A ticketing system that we didn't want and is flawed.

  • This is what happens when people don't care politics and vote for who ever the television says to vote. If people did there own research into political parties, they would find there are political parties out there whom are willing to serve the people, rather tax them.

  • Public Transport has always been FREE under Section 92 Commonwealth Constitution 1900 UK states: On the imposition of uniform duties of customs, trade (goods & services only),commence (travel), and intercourse (travel)among (within)the States, whether by means (use) of internal carriage (train, car, etc) or ocean navigation (boats etc), shall (must) be absolutely FREE. We have bee continually lied to by all State Parliaments since 1900. This is a form of Treason by overthrowing the Constitution which is the ultimate law in Australia, not a state's constitution or any Act of Parliament or any court. Please assist the public of Australia.

  • This just makes public transport prohibitive for families. It is expensive enough as it is for individuals but try and take a family of 5 on public transport over both zones. It will cost more than $40 for a return trip. Car travel will never be replaced by public transport until the cost of using it comes down dramatically. This will probably make our public transport one of the most expensive systems in the world, so much for being liveable.

  • This is very much a con. Under the $38 billion transport plan announced by Brumby in December 2008, fares were to rise by 5 per cent, not the 8.6 per cent just announced. Now that Baillieu has scrapped the Transport Plans of the previous government there should be no fare increase or it should be limited to the CPI. I notice that Terry Mulder conventiently failed to mention that will get hit with another big increase in January 2013. Might be worth asking him about that. Seems like they have decided to whack us not just the 5 per cent but to add the CPI on top of that as well, not what was originally intended.
