Twitter succumbs to censorship

The social networking website Twitter, which has over 300 million users around the world, is set to announce a policy shift that will restrict what users can tweet in certain countries.

Last year, Twitter played an integral role in spreading government dissatisfaction among Middle-Eastern peoples.

Libya, Egypt and Syria all experienced social uprisings which in part started and spread using social networking.

"As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression," Twitter wrote in a blog post.

The decision to begin censorship stands in stark contrast to Twitter's stance on the issue just 12 months ago, when Twitter Spokesperson Alex Macgillivray declared that the company was "from the free speech wing of the free speech party".

Twitter said it wants to be as transparent as possible about the change and will notify users if any of their tweets are blocked.
