Blog comments Your Say

  • a pity the Joan person was not entering comments in the spirit of the competition.

I have known Diana for 30 years throughout her professional life and I know that she is a great nurse as is her manager, that's why Diana follows her manager so she can work with her. They are a great team. In support of the previous nomination for Diana she is a great nurse and has contributed so much to aged care.

  • yes, Diana Farmer is a terrific clinical nurse, shame about her manager. Wonderful if Manager could inherit a few of Dianas skills.

    JOAN Saturday 14 August, 2010 - 8:12 PM
  • I would like to nominate Diana Farmer, a registered nurse division 1 who demonstrates care and compassion in all she does. Diana works tirelessly for our residents, ensuring their needs are met, working with their loved ones and providing support, guidance to our staff. As her manager I am in awe of her ability as a clinician, problem solving skills, and practical approach in the delivery of care, always ensuring the residents needs, wishes and values are respected.

  • I met 32 year old Natalie Gehrke at my dance class - Her looks belie her age - I thought she was much younger. As we shared career and work stories I was astounded by her maturity and her resilience for such a young woman. I have always been of the opinion that I have a good grip on what most jobs entail, but her revelations about working as an aged care psyche nurse have made me realise the daily grief, relentless and in many cases thankless work taken on by these nurses. Her days are often fraught with being hit or beaten by patients, yet she must remain calm and in control. As she talks I wonder if I could retain such self control. If ever there was a question about your effectiveness in the workplace, this job oozes doubt.Days can be made even longer by the fact that rarely she sees improvements in patients - just a resignation that they need care. She lives their pain, watches as their minds deteriorate faster than their already aging bodies...and yet is inspired by the rare glint in an eye or a slight sign of recognition. And she relays all these evnts with such joy and a sense of fun. She often says that what drives her, what makes her go back to work every day is that she belives she makes a difference. I am almost envious of her unerring confidence that she does. For me she represents a side of this life that we rarely are exposed to. It's emotionally and physically demanding yet she knows she makes a difference. She is a self effacing girl from a humble background who has taught me alot about the reality of a job that most of us could never do.

  • I have the pleasure of working with Joan Murphy (no relation) on a daily basis in the dementia specific ward at Ageing Together at Scotchman's Creek. As a Diversional Therapist my work is most beneficial to residents when supported by the efforts of nursing staff. Joan not only delivers this support in bucket loads but she models for all the other staff how important team playing is for the welfare of our residents. I also have the opportunity to observe her everyday interactions with residents, families, visitors and the wide variety of staff members at our facility. She embodies the traits we all aspire to;friendly, patient, warm, energetic, diligent and striving to improve the lives of all under her wing. She truly does inspire.
