Veteran Australian filmmaker Ben Lewin has generated a lot of Oscar buzz with his acclaimed low-budget comedy-drama The Sessions.

Inspired by an article by American writer Mark O'Brien 'On Seeing a Sex Surrogate', it tells of a 38-year polio victim in an iron lung who decides to lose his virginity.

Here Lewin, who contracted polio at age 6, speaks about the film's success, casting, the use of humour, the frustrations of financing and the concept of "disability chic".
