Kate Stevenson's Net News

Sad news this week with the passing of the Lanky Yank – Don Lane - but there were heartfelt tributes and hilarious stories as well. If you missed memories from the likes of Bert Newton, Mike McColl-Jones, and Di Rolle, you can listen to them all here on the website, but importantly you can also leave your own message for his family, friends and fans.

You must have heard of it, but if you haven’t SEEN the Channel Nine news set being invaded by a giant seagull as Peter Hitchener reads the news, then you can see it on our website. I was watching at the time and it was an absolute classic. I wonder if listeners have a favourite live TV moment - one of those, “I can’t believe they said that or did that”  type of moments. I loved Mike Munro’s A Current Affair interview with Rose Porteous where she swore black and blue she couldn’t hear him, while repeating everything he said. She was so adamant, and so insulted, Munro in the end could do little more than laugh.

The Breakfast program has taken it upon itself to find a name for a more colloquial name for the new rectangular stadium, one that Melburnians can all adopt. They received a mountain of suggestions, and have whittled it down to just 6. You can vote for your favourite on the home page, the finalists are:

The Beehive
Riverside Stadium
The Golf Ball
SARS (Soccer And Rugby Stadium)
Bubble Dome
Eggshell

John Blackman is back on Nightline, as is “Storytime”. I never heard it back in the 80s, but I’ve certainly heard that Storytime was an absolute must-hear in it’s day, when he and Uncle Roy were hosting Breakfast. Uncle Roy would read a story to Angela, Stinky Jones, a nun named Sister Narelle, and a Drunken Bum named Derrick The Derro. Not much of the story ever managed to get through because of constant interruptions by the others, but that never seemed to matter. Well, John Blackman is back every Tuesday at 8.15pm and you can hear Storytime at 8.55pm.

Random site of the week – Well, there’s been plenty of opinions voiced, and concerns raised, but the fact is Jessica Watson is out there battling the elements on her way around the world, so I guess we may as well just wish her all the best and check on her progress. She’s got an extremely comprehensive site at   http://www.jessicawatson.com.au/. You can check her route and progress, and there’s a link to her blog. There must be a few people reading it, her last few posts have received over a thousand comments! Last update yesterday afternoon she was out near Lord Howe Island and going pretty well.
