MIB

MEN IN BLACK 3 *** (106 minutes) M
Here's a case of a second sequel being better than the first because, well, it had to be. To save his taciturn parnter Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) from being killed by a toothy alien (Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords), Agent J (an apparently age-resistent Will Smith) must travel back in time to 1969. Teaming up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin in an inspired piece of stunt casting) they end up fighting for the future on the Apollo 11 launch site. Despite time travel now being the most over-used device in high-concept films, director Barry Sonnenfeld (who did the first two MIBs) breathes a surprising amount of comic energy into a sequel the world was not exactly holding its breath for. Thankfully, reliance on visual effects has been dialled down this time around for the sake of a decent story. Fans of pop icon Andy Warhol will love him here, and those put off by the cosmically ordinary MIB 2 will have their faith duly restored by this film's pervasive sense of fun. Opens Thursday.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE *** (120 minutes) E (Exempt)
Fans of the popular radio show This American Life (heard here each weekend on News Radio) are primed to lap up this special, highly engaging live-performance version of the program.  Host Ira Glass is the glue to a varied roster of acts including wonderful spoken-word performances by David Rakoff, comic essayist David Sedaris and comic Tig Notaro, whose very funny tale about singer Taylor Dayne has a killer, crowd-pleasing punchline. Frankly, the music and dance bits are of go-to-the-loo standard, but the overall effect is pleasant. Screens at the Nova this weekend (May 26 & 27) at 1pm, and next weekend (June 2 & 3)  at 1.45pm.
