Plant of the Week
Japanese Maples, great spring colour
Just ask Jane
* Sweet Bursaria – small tree to 3 metres, rather spindly but when it flowers, any time form now, in tiny creamy flowers that attract butterflies. Good one for mixing with Australialn grasses and clumps of dianella and lomandra
* Anigozanthos (Kangaroo Paw), full flowering now, look wonderful if planted in thick bands (as in the main walk at the Royal Melbourne Zoo) 1m x 2-3m. Prefer sun, well drained soil.
* Query on Boabs and do they grow in Melbourne? Native to the Kimberley, Western Australia but there are a few in Melbourne, e.g. home garden in Toolern Vale and Monash University. Fantastic icon, like and upside down tree, with branches like roots and coconut seed pods.
What to do in the garden
* Prune back Alyogyne (native hibiscus) by half to one-third.
* Grow seeds of Sunflower, e.g dwarf ‘Sensations’ or taller ‘Yellow Empress’
* Protect basil from slugs and snails with a cut off plastic drink bottle over the top of the pot or plants.
* Cut off spikes of Echium (Pride of Madiera) that have finished flowering
