Plant of the Week
Ornamental chillies – plant either in the garden or a pot anytime from now in a sunny spot. Take your choice of many different colours and heat factor, e.g. Birds Eye Chilli which is small, red and got a bit of a kick, Sweet Salsa is red and mild, Jalapeno is reasonably hot and Habanero which is “blow your head off”. Always wash your hands after handling the seeds and membrane because that is where the heat is.
Gardening Tip
Success with beans: You can still plant bean seeds directly where you want them to grow. Water them in with one teaspoon of Epson salts into five litres of water and moisten the soil. Leave them and don’t overwater until you see the seeds germinating. Seeds can rot off easily if overwatered.
Growing Broccoli right now: they take 4-5 months and add some sulphate of ammonia or a high nitrogen fertilizer as they will take up a lot of food
Tomatoes: Sometimes you might see tomato plants with the leaves going brown. If it is a fungus problem use a tomao dust to help prevent fungal diseases occurring.
