Father Bob

UPDATE: Father Bob Maguire has lost his battle to stay on at his beloved South Melbourne parish.

He'd been negotiating with the arch diocese to stay on in some capacity, and his parishioners had started a public campaign for  him to stay on.

Father Bob says he's received a letter today ordering him out by February next year.

Three weeks ago, Neil Mitchell took up Father Bob's fight and urged listeners to write a letter to the archbishop in the hope of letting Bob stay.

Unfortunately, the outpouring of support did not seem to make much of a difference.

OCTOBER 17: Father Bob Maguire, one of the most respected and outspoken Priests in Australia, is struggling to maintain his position as South Melbourne Parish Priest despite public outcry and disapproval.

Canon Law states that Father Bob has already over-extended his tenure as Parish Priest and the Archbishop is entitled to find a replacement.

In Neil Mitchell's opening editorial, the 3AW Mornings host asked listeners to support Father Bob's effort to remain a leader of the community.

Neil and many others argue that Father Bob's level of fitness, both mentally and physically, and his popularity should be more than enough to let him stay.

The Catholic archdiocese has ordered the popular priest be out of the church by February first, 2012.

Father Bob is the current Victorian of the Year.

Let your voice be heard on Father Bob's campaign to remain Parish Priest. The Father needs a wide range of voices and your say will help him stay where he belongs! Refer to the contact details below.

  • Last time I looked the church was not being overrun with people wanting to join the priesthood. Father Bob did a good job. I hope he remains in the sector helping people in need. God help us.

  • This happened recently in our parish on Long Island. We adored our Pastor and even though he would be over the retirement age limit two months AFTER he was forced to retire, the Bishop made him retire. Our Pastor had such a great way of relating the Gospel to our lives today. He had a great sense of humor and made everyone, especially the younger generation, feel at home and important in the parish life. I have to say the new Pastor we received is a very good man as well and we do like him. It was sad to force our former Pastor to retire when he has so much more to give to the people, especially in these days where they complain no one is becoming Priests. Good luck to Fr. Bob.

  • What a joke - they should just grow some ears - but I reckon they might be buried in the sand - As a popular politician once said "Dont let the bastards beat you... " or similar - GO Father Bob please don't let them beat you.

  • Why didnt Father Bob just blend in and QUIETLY go about his work as a Parish Priest, instead of continually trying to be a media star. The Catholic Church is much greater that he or any of his so called followers that are willing to set him up in his own ministry. WHAT A JOKE THAT IS! Father Bob,yes, you have and do great work but please just accept the decision of your Archbishop, remember ONE OF YOUR VOWS WAS OBEDIENCE....HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT IN YOUR QUEST FOR FAME?
