Ted ditches road safety centre

The road safety centre will not be built under Baillieu

Plans for a $50 million dollar centre to teach young Victorians about the impact of road trauma have been ditched by the Baillieu government.

The TAC Road Safety Experience Centre was announced by the former government just before last year's election campaign began.

But the Coalition didn't commit to it at the time and now, after six months of consideration, they've decided they will NOT be proceeding with it.

The government says it has good reasons, telling 3AW the proposal was developed without reference to who would pay for it and without a business case.

The government claims there was also a risk motorists would have to pay higher premiums to fund the centre.

  • Re: Ryan Smith Media Release â?? How does your used car rate in the safety stakes?

This is good news! And it makes sense, that young drivers choosing cars from the â??Safe Pickâ?? rating guide, would decrease their risk of death or serious injury in a car crash. But it will ultimately go back to driver behaviour as the best safe guard, against death or serious injury caused by road trauma.

No matter how safe the motor vehicle or how safe our roads are, without the right driver behaviour, our high at risk repeat road traffic offenders especially, will always be at greater risk of death and serious injury.

Hence my campaign for â??Road Safety Education & Road Trauma Awarenessâ?? for ALL our up & coming young drivers to be, with ongoing support for our 18 to 25 old drivers. So they donâ??t become â??high at risk, repeat road traffic offendersâ?? or are seriously injured or killed in road trauma and become a road trauma story for their family...

We will continue hearing news about our young being killed or seriously injured in motor vehicle crashes, whilst we don't have a consolidated, cohesive Road Safety Education & Road Trauma Awareness Program for ALL 15,16,17 year olds. Once again, the TAC Road Safety Experience Centre, would make a difference, by being able to deliver this message to our most at risk of death and serious injury. I tell my family's road trauma story of my son Ben killed in road trauma 2009 each month at Road Trauma Awareness Seminars. At least once, each seminar, one of these "high at risk" repeat road traffic offenders between the ages of 16 to 25 ask! "why are we not taught this at school?" and ... I have no answer...because I have the same question!

My heart goest out to the family who now will be grieving the loss of their daugther.

  • A TAC Road Safety Experience Centre initiative is imperative in order to educate ALL our up & coming young drivers 15 to 25. We need a consolidated and cohesive "Road Safety Education and Road Trauma Awareness Program" and the TAC Road Safety Experience Centre would have been the perfect vehicle to deliver this world first initiative. It costs the community $2.4 million every time one of our loved ones are killed on the roads, not to mention the cost of serious injury should they survive the car crash! Every death and serious injury ripple effect extendes out to many of us in our the community! Lets get a "Business Case" into action, lets look at a "Funding Body", lets look at "high premiums" if this is what it takes to save lives on our roads. My son was killed at the age of 25 in a motor vehicle crash and it breakes my heart, when I think of how many more lives are going to be taken by the road toll, how many families, friends and workmates are going to be impacted by their sudden death or injury. Let's not forget, it is economically cheaper to save lives than NOT and for me I will never know what wonders my son could have contributed to our society...he is not here anymore.

  • Thanks Big Ted for being cautious with my/our money. The last lot of Labour pains threw it around like there was no tomorrow (and finally there wasn't for them!), promising us what ever they thought was warm and fuzzy and enough to ge them re-elected. Didn't work thank goodness. If the Road Safety Centre proposal hadn't any commitment re who would pay for it and no business case in place then it has to be scrapped at this stage! No brainer. Sounds like the present Federal Government and the previous State Governments operate/operated under the same amateur guidelines...rush out a warm and fuzzy project, tell the people want they want to hear with a big fanfare for the announcement... then worry about the 'small detail' of how to/how not to pay for it once elected.

Once again, 'Thanks Big Ted' for being cautious with my/our money that's been depleted over a long Labour period. Steady as she goes mate with that firm hand on the tiller. Maybe down the long and winding road the Road Safety Centre proposal could be revisited when you and your team have managed to pull this State up by its bootstraps again.

  • Why do we need a road safety centre when we already have speed camera's saving our lives?
