Thumbtacks have been left on the Yarra Boulevard at Kew,

Thumbtacks are being strewn across popular cycling paths in an "act of bastardry", riders say.

Melbourne cyclist David Devlin claimed on 3AW Mornings that whoever was dropping the thumbtacks on the Yarra Boulevard at Kew was "basically looking to harm cyclists".

Mr Devlin said the thumbtacks have caused punctures and threatened to cause serious injuries.

One rider has already been hurt after coming off his bike when his front tire blew out. Two thumbtacks were later found in the tire.

"If there had've been a car behind him it would've (resulted in) quite an impact," Mr Devlin told Nick McCallum.

"I think the joke's over; it could potentially cause harm now.

"It's very, very dangerous - extremely dangerous."

Police have been notified about the thumtacks.
