Matt Davies named as athlete at centre of ASADA doping probe

Matt Davies, a leading male Australian track and field athlete, is at the centre of an ASADA doping scandal and could face up to a two-year ban.

3AW News understand the 100 metre sprinter from Brisbane has been investigated over allegations he took a banned substance last year.

Sources told 3AW News the 28 year old from Brisbane claims he had no idea he was taking a banned substance when he ordered a powder and mixed it with his drink.

Davies, who represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships in the 4 x 100 metre relay team, hasn't competed since June last year.

Under ASADA guidelines, an athlete must be provisionally suspended from all competition if he fails an initial (A) drug test.

Athletics Australia told 3AW News it was in no position to comment on the allegations until ASADA makes an announcement.

"As a signatory from the WADA code, we can't preempt any announcements from ASADA regarding any athlete findings or sanctions," a spokesperson from Athletics Australia said.

"We are not in a position to provide comment at this time but will do so if and when ASADA publicly releases any findings relevant to athletics."

Whether any other athletes are involved remains unclear.

Davies' coach, Brett Jones, has refused a request from 3AW News to comment.

Drink-driver clocked at 90 kilometres over speed limit

Posted by: Yvette Gray | Yvette Gray 15 April, 2013 - 6:56 AM
Police Car

A drink-driver is facing serious charges after being nabbed speeding 90 kilometres per hour over limit in South Morang overnight.

Victoria Police Highway Patrol officers were stunned when they clocked a ute travelling 170 kiloemtres per hour in an 80 zone in wet conditions on Plenty Road at around 9pm.

The driver, a 24-year-old Mill Park man, returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.058 per cent.

The man’s Holden SS ute has been impounded for 30 days and he is also expected to be charged on summons with conduct endangering life, speeding and drink driving.

Melbourne in need of a bike path makeover

Posted by: Tom Elliott | Tom Elliott 21 February, 2013 - 3:59 PM
Bike lanes

As a cyclist, I want to congratulate the City of Yarra for agreeing to create a Copenhagen style bike lane down Wellington St in Collingwood. For those of you unfamiliar with such lanes, bikes ride on the inside next to the footpath, then there’s public carparking and finally a single lane of traffic for motor vehicles.

The great benefit to cyclists of the Copenhagen system is that they’re kept away from moving cars, thus reducing tension and aggro between drivers and bike riders.

Of course the big negative for motorists is the fact that the total number of parking spaces will be reduced. And in peak hour, it’s possible, depending on council rules, that 2 lanes of motorised traffic will be reduced to one – thus causing further delays.

The real weakness of this bike lane plan, however, is that there’s little point in just one council doing it along one road. If we truly want more people to abandon their cars in favour of other alternatives, city-wide public transport infrastructure must be drastically improved as well.

And the problem with this requirement is that it in turn needs a comprehensive transport plan. Something that while it was promised by Premier Baillieu within 12-18 months of election back in late 2010, is yet to materialise.
