March 8: Binge Drinking and Alcohol Mis-use in young people

No-one thinks binge drinking is a good thing, especially Health Professionals and Parents. Ask and young person the day after a big night and no doubt even they would agree.

However alcohol misuse remains a problem especially in our young population, and we are often left grappling with ways to deal with it given the harm caused by the behaviour.

The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) has just released its latest guidelines on Alcohol consumption and the Senate will shortly vote on whether to hike taxes on so called “alcopops”. Its important that for any program to work it needs to be broad and involve a response from the whole community.
