Andrew McGrath has revealed he had no idea he'd be an Essendon player until his name was read out on draft night.

The midfielder was taken by the Bombers with pick 1.

He told 3AW the club sent a text message to a handful of top prospects, saying they wouldn't be revealing their pick until it was read out.

And it was McGrath.

"I honestly didn't know," he told 3AW.

"It made it all the more exciting."
