Bunnings' new policy to allow dogs on site has already resulted in injury.

Ebbie Hungerford's five-year-old daughter Madeline is recovering at home after being bitten on the leg at Bunnings in Melton on Sunday.

"We just don't think dogs should be there," Ms Hungerford told Neil Mitchell on Monday.

"Bunnings on a Sunday is really busy... just not a good environment for a dog."

Ms Hungerford said Bunnings' response to the incident couldn't have been better, including covering the medical bills.

She said the dog's owner was "very distraught" and insisted that it had never done this before.

The change in policy came into effect last week.
