North Melbourne big man Ben Brown says the AFL could 'tweak' the third man up rule to help protect the two designated ruckman in the contest.

Currently there are no laws against a player going third man up at a stoppage, however there is debate whether that rule should be changed.

Brown has been the victim of being made to be the step ladder in the past.

"As a ruck who goes in there a little bit, sometimes you can get blind sided by it," Brown said.

"It is a difficult one, maybe it's something that needs to be tweaked a little bit."
