A simple Centrelink phone call has left a Melbourne woman ‘flabbergasted’

Tom Elliott

There’s been an embarrassing bungle at Centrelink, due to its voice recognition technology.

Michelle told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell she simply wanted to check the progress of a recent claim, but received the following message:

Centrelink: “What’s the reason for your call?”

Michelle: “Progress of my claim.”

Centrelink: “That’s about payment for a stillborn baby, is that correct?”

Michelle said she tried calling twice and received the same response.

“I was quite shocked,” she told Neil.

“If I had been someone who had gone through such a heartbreaking experience, to have it put in those words… ‘payment for a stillborn baby’,

“I’m just flabbergasted.”
