February's Best: Kingston Hotel
If ever the team from Better Homes and Garden do a shoot for the most gorgeous looking pubs in Melbourne, The Kingston surely would be the cover story. Perfect setting, quaint facade, lovely gardens, it is easy to be comfortable here.
Save for just a tad too much prim and proper service, it is easy to become comfortable. This pub delivers real value for money nosh (Fish and chips is an excellent front bar dish) and either area for dining, bar or atrium, be assured that it all works well.
Real plus is a willingness of the staff to allow a taste of a certain wine if you are looking to buy. That is pub hospitality.
March's Best: Spencer Hotel
The first 15/20 of the year and thoroughly deserved. I know the term value for money gets tossed around (I know I use it frequently) and given its subjectivity, what I think and you on VFM could be miles apart.
But, when you are knocking out a duck risotto with a proper breast, not just some random pieces for $22, in a beautiful old setting, then, to quote Shane Crawford (and I really don’t want to but!!), ‘That's what I’m talking about!!
Homemade pork snags, proper pies are part of a pub menu, fairly priced, that has stood the test of time. The dining room is a treat.
April's Best: Leincester Arms
An inner suburban pub that can genuinely lay to claim to the home away from home you’ve always wanted. Have a family meal, grab some mates for a gathering, the LA is your go to man. Simply it gets the meaning of pub life – try to be as many things to as many people as you can, and you’ll succeed.
Generous spirit with its food and beverage, the pub has engendered the essence of much loved, and in a fickle world of trend and change, the Leincester rolls on with an ever increasing band of loyal customers.
Go there and enjoy yourselves – and have the crab and mussel hot pot. A pub favourite.
