Australian cricket great Ian Chappell says it's depressing to see how far the West Indies have fallen.

Australia dominated day one of the First Test in Hobart, finishing play at 3-438.

But it wasn't just the scoreline that caused Chappell concern.

He said their bowling, field settings and attitude was also alarming.

"It was really depressing, when you think what the West Indies used to be like," Chappell said.

"The fact they've been allowed to slip to this standard is a real problem for world cricket."
