  • What a statement! "The judges are in touch with community thinking but understands the frustration"?
If they were in touch then victims would not be frustrated but would feel that justice was done.
Judges having to face the fictims and explain themselves to them is a very good idea.
Maybe more judges would hand down more appropriate sentences if they knew they were going to face the victim afterwards.

    • Why would judges want to be abused after every case? I thought the run away and hide system they have running at the moment would be their preference.

      • Read the transcripts of judges senteces at http://www.austlii.edu.au/databases.html They spend half the sentence going into great detail about the criminals background as though it really matters. It's almost like it's an excuse for committing their crimes. Lots of people live terrible lives but they don't all feel the need to go out and commit crimes. Criminals are getting 7-10 years for murder cause it's watered down to manslaughter. Less than 5 years for rape, incest or child molesting. Read them. It's discraceful. Chief Justice Warren is wrong. Judges are out of touch with the community. If Judges are so understanding of victims' frustrations they'd give tougher sentences. That's what victims deserve and that's what communities deserve.

        • Judges/Magistrates/Lawyers regard the ordinary person as not having the intelligence of themselves, and could not care at all about what we think and want!
If they were really in touch with the community they would pay attention to the community and give much longer sentances to evil criminals, and not set them free after a few years to offend again.

          • Every 3AW blogger knows that Judges get it wrong 100% of the time when they sentence crims. They will never hand down jail sentences with which the people think are satisfactory; so, let's just get rid of all the judges and have the crims sentenced by 3AW listeners, with a right of appeal to Alan Jones, Bolt and Piers Ackermann. No appearance your Honour!!

            • Guess what. Now these same judges disliked by the community for their ineptitude and poor judgment always focusing on the rights of perpetrators instead of victims have become the victims' advisers.
Is the planet changing axis ?

              • Now let's all sit down & have a friendly chat with a cuppa, even after the perpetrator has ONCE again escaped any form of relative punishment or Justice. YEAH RIGHT~!

                • Now come on people, let's GET REAL~! As soon as governments spend money on programs to entertain, control or rehabilitate prisoners, you jump on your keyboards to bitch & moan~! Prisons cost money to run & they don't win votes. Realistically, the Judiciary are the meat in the sandwiche, & they can't win, irrespective of sentences delivered. Damned if they do, & damned if they don't~! We can't even get Ted to spend 50mil on an ICC (another undelivered promise), let alone more dollars to build prisons~!

                  • This sounds all too familiar, it is the spin doctors at work again trying to calm the community. As one who sees the destruction that crimes have on our community daily, and one who has voiced their concern on many occasions, I find it another slap in the fact to victims, survivors, advocates & the community as a whole. Wee are not all Stupid, Ignorant or NaÃ?¯ve.
