Police said the man, 84, was turning right onto the Great Alpine Road from Happy Valley Road about 10am when his ute collided with a refrigerated transport van.

Passers-by tried to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene, The Border Mail reports.

The van's driver, 27, was taken to Wangaratta hospital bruised, shaken and with injuries to his ribs.

Police, firefighters, paramedics and VicRoads staff attended the scene.

No roads have been closed but traffic is being diverted around the crash site.
