SEPTEMBER, 2010: An Australian soldier claims our troops are not getting the support they need, on the front-line in Afghanistan.

The un-named soldier has sent an email to a friend at home, claiming he's been exposed to unnecessary risks.

PLAY AUDIO: Jim Molan speaks about the email on 3AW

The soldier claims he fought aside Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney and believes his death last month, could have been avoided if they'd been supplied with adequate intelligence and resources.

Retired Major General Jim Molan says the email is clearly emotional, but makes valid points.

Real Tears? Many don't think so

jg AUDIO: Prime Minister Julia Gillard fought back tears in a rare show of emotion as she addressed Parliament this afternoon, choking up as she described the impact of floods that have ravaged the country. Listen to her speech here.

'Political Storms'

gilllard abbott HINCH: "Most of the recent headlines have been about stormy weather but there are also political storms looming for both our leaders. Neither Julia Gillard nor Tony Abbott seems to be covering themselves with glory these days."

  • Abbott definately sounded blaise about the whole thing. Commander Creighton comment directly afterwards was he as an American G.I. stressing the fight is demanding. That the Commander was expectedly indicating more support is needed to continue fighting. All to be expected from a nation which has done all the heavy lifting. It's Abbotts subsequent reaction that confirms that his statement really didn't have a question mark at the end of it. That silence after being confronted will always cast doubt over his views on soldiering. It's not that he's making light of it, he's just indifferent to what some people do regarding sacrafice. In that context he's no better than Gillard.

      • As a Vietnam Vet, I am disgusted at Abbott's comment. The other diggers complained about lack of fire support - Abbott should have pressed the Yanks on that, not dismissed it as an accident. The Libs started these 2 wars, you would think he would support our diggers, not dismiss a death so cheaply. He was too worried about jet lag to get there first, now he does this. The man is an ignorant fool.

                  • Another media beat up.
S**t happens is a traditional aussie summation used in situations where all care and precaution has been taken, where no individual has done wrong, where all the rules have been followed but the whole thing has turned to S**t.
Probably the perfect words to use in the situation of Jared MacKinney.
