Tim’s initial broadcasting opportunity came on commercial radio station 7AD, in Devonport, Tasmania, where he broadcast football in 1972. This followed a period studying science at the University of Tasmania that was sufficiently unsuccessful as to point him in other directions.
A small taste of sports broadcasting was enough to set him in search of a career and in 1973 Tim found work with the ABC in Launceston. This was the beginning of a 35 year association with the national broadcaster during the course of which he moved to Melbourne in 1979.
Tim resigned from the full-time staff of the ABC in early 2003 to take on a role as a television commentator with Network Ten, within a new working life as a freelance commentator and journalist. As well as broadcasting on television and radio, this also involved writing a weekly column for The Age and, later, The Sunday Age.
In 2010 he joined 3AW’s radio football team as host of the Sunday afternoon AFL coverage.
Tim has now been broadcasting VFL/AFL football for 31 years and his broadcast, on 3AW, of the drawn 2010 grand final between Collingwood and St Kilda was his 26th grand final call. He missed out on a 27th due to duties with Channel 10 at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
