Concerns have been raised about the condition of the West Gate Bridge after a bus went up in flames last night.

Associate professor in structural engineering at the department of civil engineering at Monash University, Colin Caprani, says it’s unlikely the steel underneath the bridge has been impacted.

“Looking at the pictures … the flames went upwards, the bus was on fire, so the amount of heat that went downwards through the asphalt to heat up the steel that the traffic runs on  … I can’t imagine that there would’ve been substantial exposure to the fire,” he told Neil Mitchell.
