Dramatic scenes as car catches fire in Blackburn South

Witnesses have reported hearing “explosion noises” after a car caught fire in Melbourne’s east.

Caller Sam told Tony Jones she was driving past Lavelle Street and Blackburn Road in Blackburn South when she spotted the smoke.

“The car was fully ablaze, and making explosion noises,” she said.

“No one was in the car which was good.”

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control a short time ago.

She said the tree next to it also caught fire.

Heavy smoke was seen in the area as fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.

A man aged in his 80s was treated by paramedics for burns to his hands.
