Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles.

Fromelles was the first major battle fought by Australian troops on the Western Front during WW1.

Tom Elliott spoke with Dan Tehan, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.

Minister Tehan is in France for the commemoration.

‘It’s the bloodiest 24 hours in Australia’s history.’

Donald Breguet is an 81-year-old descendant of a previously unknown soldier who was killed in the battle, he spoke with 3AW Drive.

Donald had his DNA tested last year to confirm his relation to Justin Hercules Breguet.

‘Only in May was I notified of the success with my DNA.’

‘It was a very big relief.. just to think he was in a grave, and know what knew who he was.’

‘Now he can have his own grave with a headstone.’ – Donald told Tom Elliott.

5,533 people lost their lives that day.
