3AW listener warns of Bourke Street fund scam

Victoria Police has confirmed 3AW Drive’s reports surrounding fake fundraising calls for victims of the Bourke Street tragedy.

A Word On The Street caller told Tom Elliott on Tuesday she was almost scammed by someone claiming to be collecting money for the fund.

Mel told 3AW Drive she received a call from someone who said they were from the Melbourne City Council.

She said the caller requested her bank and credit card details, when Mel questioned him she said he hung up. 

‘For someone to be trying to profit off the intense misery of others is appalling,’ Tom Elliott said at the time.

Similar scams occurred following the Black Saturday bushfires.
