The bottleneck in Melbourne’s west is about to get worse.

3AW Mornings has revealed more roadworks are about to commence, on one of the roads motorists have been told to use while construction takes place to widen the Bolte Bridge.

VicRoads has confirmed 18 months of roadworks will also begin on Shepherd’s Bridge, over the Maribyrnong river, some time in April.

STATEMENT FROM VICROADS

‘Works on West Gate Distributor Stage 1 will commence in April this year.

‘This project will improve traffic flow for local traffic, pedestrians and cyclists and improve freight access to and from the Port of Melbourne by:

  • Widening Moreland Street to provide a four lane divided road, with an upgraded connection to Footscray Road
  • New signalised intersections in Moreland Street at Footscray Road, Parker Street and Whitehall Street
  • The widening and strengthening of Shepherd’s Bridge over the Maribyrnong River with the removal of the pedestrian and cycling paths on the bridge
  • A new bridge over the Maribyrnong River for pedestrians and cyclists.

‘During these works, lanes will be maintained on Shepherd’s Bridge, Footscray Road and Moreland Road, ensuring traffic can continue moving.

‘The West Gate Distributor project is expected to be complete by mid-2017.’
