A 3AW producer’s experience at the weekend highlights a scenario Victorians are finding themselves in which a transport advocate says is “simply wrong”.

One taxi driver told the producer they’d charge $95 to get from Flinders Lane to Fitzroy, then Brunswick. A second cab driver said it’d cost $75, and a third said $35.

Under changes which came into effect in September, it’s illegal for taxi drivers to negotiate fares for unbooked trips. Transport advocate Rod Barton says the government has put the travelling public in a “confrontational position” and it’s “simply wrong”.
