The massive generator longer than an A380 Airbus and weighing 256 tonnes has begun its long trip from Gippsland to the city.

Pulled by four trucks, making the convoy a total of 650 tonnes, the load left the Traralgon Loy Yang Power Plant last night and is making its way – at 20km at hour – to Port Melbourne.

The superload will be loaded onto a cargo ship, bound for Germany where it will be repaired.

Callers to Neil Mitchell say it was an incredible sight.

Blake Klister posted a video of the convoy moving through Gippsland and said 1500 people turned out to watch it.

“I used to work out at Loy Yang, I found it fascinating they were carting this generator off to Melbourne, me and a few of the boys are all petrol heads, and just came out to watch this truck power up the hill,” he said.
