The Victorian Government is under fire from anti-violence groups and the chief police commissioner after approving a Dan Murphy’s booze barn in one of Melbourne’s worst ‘hot spots’ for family violence.

On the very same day the Andrews Government announced plans to spend $500 million tackling family violence, it went ahead and approved a booze barn in Cranbourne East.

This despite the City of Casey recording the highest number of family violence incidents of any local council in Victoria.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton is joining local police to object to the liquor barn.

The go ahead from the Andrews Government comes despite a number of key recommendations in the report by the Royal Commission into Family Violence that ‘greater attention should be paid to the relationship between alcohol and family violence.’

The government says the decision was made by an independent tribunal.

But Jane Garrett, Minister for Liquor Regulation, said her hands were tied.

‘That’s the decision of the regulator, which I can’t overrule,’ she said.

Sam Aziz says they’ve already got 70 liquor stores, they don’t need 71.

‘There’s a very strong correlation between the proliferation of liquor outlets and violence,’ he said.
