The World Anti-Doping Agency has described the suspensions of 34 current and former Essendon players for doping as an issue of international significance.

WADA’s Director General, David Howman, told Ross and John on 3AW Breakfast that the decision wasn’t a surprise.

He also dismissed calls from the Player’s Association for the AFL to detatch itself from the WADA code.

AFL Commissioner Mike Fitzpatrick also yesterday said: ‘This Essendon process has taken too long and invites a discussion about the way the WADA code applies to team sports.’

Mr Howman rubbished that sentiment.

‘We cater for all team sports throughout the world,’ Mr Howman said.

‘It’s not as though the AFL is alone in this.

‘I understand it stems from what the AFL might see is done in the United States … because they have a collective bargaining agreement and do not follow the code.

‘And I’d suggest that’s what they’re trying to achieve in Australia.’
