Three people have been taken to hospital after a chemical leak at a Melbourne shopping centre.

Fire Rescue Victoria and Country Fire Authority crews were called to the incident at Pacific Werribee at 11.40am, after a caller to triple-O reported a strong smell.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find a chemical leak.

Firefighters — wearing breathing apparatus and HAZMAT equipment — are working to contain the leak and will remain on scene to safely ventilate the premises.

Patrons within the premises were evacuated as a precaution.

Paramedics have takne three people to hospital.
