Coles is trialling coinless shopping trolley technology at its store on Riversdale Road, Camberwell.

Customers must download an app and buy a refundable $2 digital token if they want to use a trolley.

They’ll then need to scan a QR code to unlock a trolley.

Once the trolley is returned, the $2 deposit will be returned to the customer’s account.

The supermarket giant says customers who don’t wish to use the app can speak to a team member in store.

Coles hopes the new technology will reduce the number of abandoned trolleys.

A Coles spokeswoman told the Herald Sun the new technology did not have a GPS installed and would not track the trolley user’s movements.
