Road safety lobby group calls for compulsory alcohol interlocks for young drivers
A national road safety lobby group is calling for compulsory alcohol interlock devices on all cars driven by P-platers.
In a new report, Austroads recommended mandatory breathalyser interlocks to help reduce crashes and road trauma.

Dr Rob Atkinson from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ said if the technology saved lives, it should be investigated.
‘Any technology that potentially saves lives is worth exploring,’ he told Neil Mitchell.
‘We can do something that will change that behaviour and save lives is worthy of exploring.’

Samantha Cofield from the TAC said the idea was worth considering.
‘Alcohol remains a major problem for us in terms of further reducing road trauma particularly in deaths and serious injuries,’ she said.
‘We really do need to continue looking for initiatives that are going to reduce those numbers.’
