Use of ‘dangerous’ e-scooters only adding to road trauma concerns

Tom Elliott

The Director of Trauma Services at The Alfred has expressed concern about the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in Melbourne.

Professor Mark Fitzgerald stopped short of calling for them to be banned, but said they shouldn’t be mixing with traffic and shouldn’t be mixing with pedestrians.

“I think they’re dangerous,” he said.

His views come on the back of an increase in the number of patients being admitted to ICU after road incidents.

439 people were admitted to intensive care in the past year, compared with 330 people in 2018.

3AW is proudly helping support The Alfred Critical Care Appeal again this year, which is The Alfred’s most significant annual fundraising appeal.
