Victoria’s bail laws are too harsh and should be reformed, says the president of the Law Institute of Victoria.

The bail act was changed in 2018 on the back of the Bourke Street tragedy, effectively making it more difficult for alleged offenders to be given bail.

But Tania Wolff said the changes had impacted the wrong people.

“We have 44 per cent of our current prison population that are unsentenced and on remand,” she told 3AW.
