Tom Elliott says a crucial question about whether the North Richmond supervised drug injecting facility has been a “success” isn’t being answered by the Andrews government.

The controversial drug room is set to become permanent, with the government saying an independent review found the trial had saved 63 lives and “successfully managed” almost 6000 overdoses.

The 3AW Drive host says there is another question, which was stated as a crucial aim of the trial, that is routinely avoided.

Former heroin addict Mick Hall, who used the drug for more than a decade, has been clean for 22 years and is now a drug councillor.

He says the decision to make the drug room permanent was “mind-boggling”.

“I just wonder what is going in the government’s head where they think that’s OK,” he said.
