Neil Mitchell calls out ‘frightening’ reaction to Jon Faine’s speech

Neil Mitchell says he’s “really worried” about the reaction to a comment made by former ABC commentator Jon Faine at the Melbourne Press Club’s annual dinner on Friday.

Speaking about the Voice referendum, Mr Faine said “why some urban, white commentators think their opinions should prevail undermines the very concept of a Voice”.

“I’m told his comments were met with applause and cheers from some of the elite of Melbourne’s media, and that really worries me,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“Jon Faine is entitled to his opinion … but for the media gathering to celebrate somebody suggesting urban white people don’t have a right to express an opinion frightens me.

“It shows a total misunderstanding of the role of media.”
