Proposed liquor licensing changes to be ‘additional burden’ on venues

Tony Moclair

Following news of proposed changes to Victoria’s liquor licensing laws, shadow minister for casino, gaming and liquor regulation, Danny O’Brien, warned that the proposed changes will have a large impact on venues.

Currently the fees are universal, but the proposed changes will mean that different venues will pay different fees.

“We’re seeing proposals of 35 per cent increases even for a small restaurant, but even up for a 996 per cent increase for a large restaurant and café in certain circumstances,” Mr O’Brien told Dee Dee.

Mr O’Brien expressed concern that some venues won’t be able to absorb the cost and that they would be forced to pass the cost on to customers.

“It’s the size of the increase that is really going to have an impact on some of these businesses,” Mr O’Brien said.
