The push for rehab for one-off non-violent offenders

Jacqui Felgate

Liberal Party member for the Northern Metropolitan region, Evan Mulholland, says he wants less jail time for non-violent offenders.

He says those who commit serious crimes such as stabbing should go to prison, but for non-violent crimes, alternatives could be looked at.

“Where there is a repeat offence [of violent crimes] … it shows someone that is not capable of reform and prison might be the best place for them, but where there is a one-off offence, I think we’d do well to rehabilitate to try to support them,” he told Tom Elliott.
