ASK NEIL ANYTHING: How many people can fit on a tram?

ASK NEIL ANYTHING

We know a tram can weigh up to as much as 30 skateboarding rhinos, but how many people can fit on a tram?

Professor of public transport at Monash University, Graham Currie, has provided the answer.

“The design standard is 210 because the largest tram is the E-Class tram, 33 metres long … but if you were in … China on buses, they would have a standard of eight people per metre square … so the crush-load in China with one of our trams – you’d get 768 people on a E-Class tram,” he told Neil Mitchell.
