A mysterious light seen flying through the Melbourne sky overnight has sent social media into meltdown as to what the object may be.

Science expert, Dr Gail Isles, said it was unlikely a meteor, but rather something else.

“We’ve seen it as this big burning fireball,” Dr Isles told Neil Mitchell.
