Farmers turn to drastic measures as livestock prices plummet

Ross and Russ

Some farmers are giving their sheep away for free, amid fears the forecast El Nino dry summer could strip paddocks bare.

Over the past three years, farmers have rebuilt their flocks, sending fewer lambs and sheep to abattoirs and as a result, the current glut of livestock has pushed prices down to $4 a kilogram for lamb.

Victorian Farmers Federation Livestock president, Scott Young, says it should mean cheaper prices at the supermarket.
