A scrap metal business has been shut down and several people arrested as part of an investigation into copper theft.

Eleven people are believed to be responsible for more than 50 large-scale copper thefts valued at $780,000.

Police believe the group used portable power tools to cut through cabling at telecommunications pits to steal large quantities of copper.

The investigation has seen a second hand dealer business in Reservoir which is believed to have received more than a quarter of million dollars in stolen metals, shut down.

The business owner, a 58-year-old Cottles Bridge man, is facing multiple charges, including 10 counts of handling stolen goods.

While a 43-year-old Bundoora man is accused of stealing $215,000 worth of copper cabling.
