Lord Mayor Robert Doyle in studio with Neil Mitchell
Melbourne’s Lord Mayor maintains he won’t allow the city to become a fortress after the government announced plans to install bollards in the CBD.
$10 million has been set aside in the state budget for retractable bollards, more CCTV and an alarm system in the CBD.
The government says it’ll provide transponders for trams and ambulances to make the bollards go up and down and allow immediate access.
Robert Doyle told Neil Mitchell there’s still a long way to go before anything is finalised.
‘If they are retractable bollards the default position is that they will be down, I would have thought, and then put up when needed,’ Doyle said on 3AW Mornings.
‘You can’t have them sitting up in the Bourke Street Mall with a tram going passed every two minutes.’
