The ‘not acceptable’ move one Melbourne developer is making

Jacqui Felgate

An apartment block in North Melbourne will be demolished just five years after being built.

The RMIT Village development will soon make way for student housing after a vote by the City of Melbourne.

Deputy Lord Mayor Nice Reece says it isn’t acceptable nor sustainable to tear down a high-rise development so soon after it was built.

“I want to see less of this happening,” Mr Reece told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive.

“Buildings account for 66 per cent of our emissions in Melbourne. It is not acceptable for developers to be building disposable buildings that are only intended to stand for a couple of years before they’re demolished.”
