Neil Mitchell has had a robust discussion with a refugee advocate about what Australia should do with violent criminals who are born overseas.

Issac Gatkouth, 19, came to Australia from Sudan a decade ago and settled in Melbourne’s south east.

He’s now got a criminal history seven pages long, been linked with the Apex gang and was involved in January’s youth detention riots.

Neil Mitchell wants to know whether he can be deported, given he wasn’t born here.

‘He can’t be removed,’ refugee advocate Ian Rintoul said on 3AW Mornings.

‘He can’t be sent back to his country and put in danger.’

Mr Rintoul said it was up to Australia to ‘take the good with the bad’ once accepting somebody into the country.

Neil Mitchell: ‘But you do accept it’s a breach of trust? You come as a refugee and the next thing you’re a violent criminal.’

Ian Rintoul: ‘People born in Australia become violent criminals.’

Neil Mitchell: ‘But you can’t deport them.’

Ian Rintoul: ‘And you can’t deport Issac.’

Mr Rintoul then laughed off suggestions Victoria had a problem with African gang related crime.

‘It’s not funny,’ Neil Mitchell said.
