Council in Melbourne’s north criticised for ‘gender-segregated’ bike workshops

Jacqui Felgate

Merri-bek council has drawn criticism for hosting bike workshops specifically for non binary and females – only.

Councillor at Merri-bek, Oscar Yildiz, says the choice to have gender-segregated bike workshops is not inclusive.

“Councillors are complaining about rate-capping, and the fact we need to tighten the belt, and here we are wasting tax-payers money on specific work shops for specific genders,” he told Jacqui Felgate.

Council Watch’s Dean Hurlston says it’s a little strange but people need to learn to co-exist.

“If we actually don’t teach people how to co-exist, we just perpetuate the problem, we need to expose the whole community to [gender and sexuality diversity] this just being a normal part of life,” he said.
