Scientists urge whale observers to keep their drones at a distance

Ross and Russ

Whale lovers will again track whales as they migrate up Australia’s east coast, but experts are warning drones can disrupt migration patterns, and risks their mating season.

Marine scientist at Macquarie University, Dr Vanessa Pirotta, says experts are urging observers – who aren’t whale researchers – to fly their drones higher.

“We want to protect whales in our waters, and they are protected, and we want to keep it that way,” she told Ross and Russ.
